The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
