The Romans (Al-Room)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. 1 The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) 2 (within a few years) they will be victorious. 3 All matters of the past and future are in the hands of God. The believers will enjoy the help of God on that Day. 4 In Allah succour. He succoureth whomsoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 5 (It is) a Promise of Allah (i.e. Allah will give victory to the Romans against the Persians), and Allah fails not in His Promise, but most of men know not. 6 They know an outward part of the present life, but of the Hereafter they are heedless. 7 Do they not reflect on themselves? Allah created the heavens and the earth and whatever lies between them in Truth and for an appointed term. Yet many people deny that they will meet their Lord. 8 And did they not travel in the land to see what sort of fate befell those before them? They were stronger than them, and they cultivated the land and inhabited it more than them, and their Noble Messengers came to them with clear proofs; so it did not befit Allah’s Majesty to oppress them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves. 9 Evil was the end of the harmdoers, because they belied the verses of Allah and mocked at them. 10
