So they set out, but, when they got into a boat, the man made a hole in it. Moses exclaimed, "Have you made a hole in the boat to drown the people in it? You have indeed done a dreadful thing!" 71 [Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?" 72 Musa said: take me not to task for what I forget, and impose not in my affair hardship. 73 And so the two went on, till, when they met a young man, [the sage] slew him - [whereupon Moses] exclaimed: "Hast thou slain an innocent human being without [his having taken] another man's life? Indeed, thou hast done a terrible thing!" 74 ۞ 'Did I not tell you' he replied, 'that you would not be able to bear patiently with me' 75 Moses said: "Keep me no more in your company if I question you concerning anything after this. You will then be fully justified." 76 So they twain journeyed on till, when they came unto the folk of a certain township, they asked its folk for food, but they refused to make them guests. And they found therein a wall upon the point of falling into ruin, and he repaired it. (Moses) said: If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken payment for it. 77 He said: 'This is the parting between me and you. But now I will tell you the interpretation of that which you could not patiently bear. 78 "As for that boat, it belonged to some needy people who toiled upon the sea - and I desired to damage it because [I knew that] behind them was a king who is wont to seize every boat by brute force. 79 As for the boy, his parents are believers, and we were afraid lest he should impose on them with his insolence and disbelief. 80 "So we intended that their Lord should change him for them for one better in righteousness and near to mercy. 81 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience." 82
