It is God who takes away men's souls upon their death and the souls of the living during their sleep. Then He withholds those for whom He has ordained death and restores the souls of others for an appointed term. There are certainly signs in this for those who reflect. 42 Or have they taken intercessors besides Allah? Say: what! even though they did not ever have control over anything, nor do they understand. 43 Say: "God's is the intercession entirely; His is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; then to Him you will return." 44 When God alone is mentioned the hearts of those who do not believe in the life to come, are filled with resentment. But when others are mentioned apart from God, they begin to rejoice. 45 Say: "O God! Originator of the heavens and the earth! Knower of all that is beyond the reach of a created being's perception, as well as of all that can be witnessed by a creature's senses or mind! It is Thou who wilt judge between Thy servants [on Resurrection Day] with regard to all on which they were wont to differ!" 46 Even if the wrong-doers had all that there is on earth, and as much more, (in vain) would they offer it for ransom from the pain of the Penalty on the Day of Judgment: but something will confront them from Allah, which they could never have counted upon! 47 And the evil of what they had earned would become visible to them; and what they used to mock would surround them from all sides. 48 When an affliction befalls man, he cries out to Us; but when We grant him a favour from Us, he says: “I have been granted this on account of my knowledge.” Nay; this (favour) is a test; but most of them do not know. 49 Those who preceded them said the same thing but they gained nothing from what they did; 50 and the evil consequences of their deeds overtook them. The wrongdoers among these will also be overtaken by the evil consequences of their deeds. They will be utterly unable to frustrate (Us). 51 Know they not that Allah expandeth provision for whomsoever He will, and stinteth it for whomsoever He will! Verily herein are signs for a people who believe. 52
