A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and many from the later generations. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
