He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And whereas he fears, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 In honored books, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 Noble and pious. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 Then We cause to grow therein the grain, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Dust shall cover them 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
