a good many of olden times, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
