The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 except those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
