Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
