The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
