The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the sun and its heat and brightness, 1 And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). 12 Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
