Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
