The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
