The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the declining star, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
