The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
