[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 125 "So fear Allah and obey me. 126 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 127 Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves, 128 and erect huge palaces as though you will live for ever, 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 fear Him who has aided you with all that you know -- 132 Gave you increase of cattle and sons, 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 'Indeed, I fear for you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 135 They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers! 136 "This is no other than a customary device of the ancients, 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 In response they denied him – We therefore destroyed them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
