In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 Stay up the night long save a little 2 half the night, or a little less 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah). 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion - 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender - 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little, 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 And a food that choketh and a torment afflictive. 13 On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. 16 Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired? 17 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. 18 Verily this is an admonition; let him therefore, who will, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
