The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
