The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
