The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the Book, and a Qur'an luminous. 1 The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim). 2 so leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and let them be beguiled by vain hopes; for soon they will realise [the truth]. 3 Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it. 4 No nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 They say: 'You to whom the Remembrance is sent down, you are indeed mad. 6 "Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?" 7 We do not send the angels but with truth, and then they would not be respited. 8 It is We who have sent down the Reminder and We will, most surely, safeguard it. 9 (O Muhammad), certainly We did send Messengers before you among the nations which have gone by. 10 And whenever a Messenger came to them, they never failed to mock him. 11 Thus do We make it to enter into the hearts of the guilty; 12 They believe not therein, and already the example of the ancients hath gone forth. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 still they would say: 'Our eyes were dazzled; truly, we must have been a bewitched people' 15
