In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 keep vigil the night, except a little 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 or a little more, but recite the Quran slowly and distinctly. 4 Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 food that chokes and painful punishment 13 One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. 18 Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord! 19
