The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
