[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 Their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear God? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 What, do you build on every prominence a sign, sporting, 128 and erect huge palaces as though you will live for ever, 129 And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants; 130 Have fear of God and obey me. 131 fear Him who has aided you with all that you know -- 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 I fear for you the chastisement of an Awesome Day." 135 They said: it is equal unto us whether thou admonishest or art not of the admonishers. 136 This is but a custom of the ancients. 137 We are not going to be damned." 138 Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 139 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 140
