A throng of the ancients 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
