a good many of olden times, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left. O Companions of the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They had been affluent before, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
