In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, 1 Rise to pray in the night except a little, 2 Half of it - or subtract from it a little 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Verily the rising by night! it is most curbing and most conducive to right speech. 6 During the day, you are preoccupied with many activities. 7 So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion - 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously. 10 And leave them to Me – these wealthy deniers – and give them some respite. 11 Verily, with Us are fetters (to bind them), and a raging Fire. 12 and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 We have sent an Apostle to you as a witness against you, as We had sent an apostle to the Pharaoh. 15 But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
