۞ NOW WHENEVER [the nature of] the son of Mary is set forth as an example, [O Muhammad,] lo! thy people raise an outcry on this score, 57 and say: "Which is better - our deities or he?" [But] it is only in the spirit of dispute that they put this comparison before thee: yea, they are contentious folk! 58 He ['Iesa (Jesus)] was not more than a slave. We granted Our Favour to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel (i.e. his creation without a father). 59 Had We wanted, We could have made the angels as your successors on the earth. 60 And verily he is a sign of the Hour wherefore dubitate not thereof, and follow Me: this is the straight path. 61 And do not ever let the devil stop you; he is indeed your open enemy. 62 And when Jesus came with the clear signs he said, 'I have come to you with wisdom, and that I may make clear to you some of that whereon you are at variance; so fear you God and obey you me. 63 For God, He is my Lord and your Lord: so worship Him: that is a straight path." 64 But the factions among them differed. Then woe unto those who do wrong from the doom of a painful day. 65 Await they aught save the Hour, that it shall come upon them suddenly, when they know not? 66 The friends shall on that day be enemies one to another, except those who guard (against evil). 67
