The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
