The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 But save him who fears 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
