A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
