The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And rejects goodness, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
