The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
