Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Kaf Ha Ya Ain Suad. 1 Commemorate the beneficence of your Lord on Zachariah, His devotee, 2 when he cried to his Lord in secret. 3 Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee! 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 (Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)." 7 He said, 'O my Lord, how shall I have a son, seeing my wife is barren, and I have attained to the declining of old age?' 8 (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Zachariah came out to his people from place of worship and inspired them to glorify the Lord both in the morning and evening. 11 (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. 12 and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious, 13 And kind to his parents, and he was not overbearing or rebellious. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born, the day that he dies, and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
