a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
