The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Createth man from a clot. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 And yet, but yet man is rebellious, 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him call on his concourse! 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
