The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 and purify your robes, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons present by his side. 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
