The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
