a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
