The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 He has no fear of its sequel. 15
