The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
