The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
