The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
