The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
