Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 therein every wise bidding 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
