The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
