The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 But save him who fears 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
