Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he called to his Lord a private supplication. 3 Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee! 4 And now I fear my kinsfolk after I am gone; and my wife is barren. So give me, from Thee, a kinsman 5 to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you." 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached infirm old age? 8 He (the angel) said, “So it is; your Lord says, ‘This is easy for Me – in fact I created you before this, at a time when you did not exist.’” 9 (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. 12 And compassion from Us, and goodness. So he was devout, 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not insolent, disobedient. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born, the day that he dies, and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
