The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and all those on earth. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 who guard their privates 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
