Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
