A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
